Presented by Spencer Doran

Album Listening

Program Description

Mono Space presents an Album Listening Session of Ecophony Rinne by Geinoh Yamashirogumi, hosted by Spencer Doran. The event will serve as an introduction to the work of the Japanese performing collective Geinoh Yamashirogumi and contextualization of their landmark album, reissued by London-based record label Time Capsule. The evening features listening examples from their previous releases, ethnographic field recordings conducted by their director Tsutomu Ōhashi and information on his scientific research into hypersonic effect.

About Spencer Doran

Spencer is a composer, sound designer and researcher working across the disparate-but-adjacent fields of abstract electronic music, game audio design and environmental music studies. As half of the “humanely futuristic” duo Visible Cloaks, Doran helmed albums such as Reassemblage (2017) and Paradessence (2026) for New York label RVNG Intl., developing a form of amorphous, omni-directional digital composition intended to be appreciated in both active and passive listening space.

As a researcher, he co-runs the Empire of Signs imprint (known for introducing Hiroshi Yoshimura to an international audience) and compiled the Grammy-nominated compilation Kankyō Ongaku for Light in the Attic Records. His music system design has included the audio direction and interactive score for the Playstation 5 title SEASON: A Letter to the Future and music system composing for the psychotherapy app Wavepaths. His work as both composer and researcher deals with concepts like human/digital hybridity, environmental sound design, east/west feedback loops of artistic influence and the glistening sheen of the hyperreal.

“Time Capsule is a reissue focused record label that captures the feelings & sonic experiences from across time & space.”
