Mono Space is a high fidelity listening gallery dedicated to the preservation of music culture and the presentation of music recordings as works of art.
Located in a renovated warehouse in Portland’s historic Pearl District, this nonprofit venture provides opportunities for collective deep listening experiences, while offering public programming that opens up the layered worlds of recorded music, past and present.
At the center of our engagement with music is a purpose-built analog sound system designed by Devon Turnbull. The system serves as a shrine to music and is an optimal platform for attuning to its physical qualities, being as faithful to the original sound recording as possible.
Mono Space recognizes that music is a crucial connective tissue within the human experience. Individuals use it to align their bodies, hearts and minds, and shape their personal well-being. Communities wield it as a sonic code to define who they are and what they believe, manifesting a shared history and purpose.
And while music is more present in lives than ever before, the public spaces where its healing, and unifying qualities can be emphasized are disappearing. Our gallery honors the traditions of these cultural spaces and is available as a local resource for embracing the vast breadth of listening culture.
We welcome everyone with an open-hearted reverence for music to play, hear, and sense records together; to engage with our programming featuring guest selectors and creative and cultural practitioners; and to visit our vinyl collection and nascent public library.
