For more than 50 years, Funkadelic has soundtracked the outer edges of Black music, using funk, soul, and rock to illuminate the unspoken and unseen. In this listening session, Moore guides the audience through the band’s self-titled debut, Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow, and the classic Maggot Brain, tracing the essence of Funkadelic and the liberation current running through their work.

About Marcus J. Moore

Marcus J. Moore is an author and music journalist whose writing examines the emotional and political undercurrents of Black music. Moore’s work has appeared in The New York Times, NPR, The Nation, and The Atlantic, blending criticism with cultural history and close listening.

Moore also creates spaces for intentional listening and dialogue through public conversations, liner notes, and artist interviews. This practice is rooted in slowing down and treating music as a shared experience, hearing the sound and the world that produced it.
