Mono Space presents a Valentines Day evening with Alex Newman and Vursatyl, centered on the life and music of D'Angelo.

Program Description

Despite recording and releasing just three albums in his lifetime, D’Angelo impacted music in a way few artists have. On this Valentine’s night, we invite listeners into an intentional, listening-led evening built around his work.

Through selections from across his catalog and shared dialogue, the session reflects on love, vulnerability, and the deep sense of care that runs through his music, making it feel both intimate and timeless. All recordings will be played through the OJAS hi-fi sound system, allowing the detail and warmth of the music to fully unfold.

Following the program, a short MTV UK documentary, produced and directed by Emily Barnes shortly after Voodoo’s release, will be screened in the listening gallery.

About Alex Newman

Alex Newman grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, in a home filled with records. After studying jazz in Seattle’s celebrated Washington Middle and Garfield High School programs, he became active in Los Angeles’s underground hip-hop scene as a producer, MC, and DJ. Now based in Portland, Oregon, Alex hosts The New Format on KMHD, weekdays from 11am to 1pm.

About Vursatyl

Vursatyl, born and raised in Portland, Oregon, is a founding member of the city’s hip-hop group The Lifesavas, as well as a local educator and solo artist. Growing up singing in church and coming of age in 1980s Northeast Portland, he was deeply involved in the local hip-hop scene and eventually joined forces with Jumbo and Rev Shines to form The Lifesavas. A dedicated hip-hop historian, Vursatyl values every opportunity to share his platform, his music, and his insight with others.

The Listening Experience
